Ep58 – A Tale of Two Gigs 2

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 58 – A Tale of Two Gigs 2
Two gigs back to back this week.  First up a rather sparse comedy/poetry/music night in a tiny room in Camden organised by an acquaintance from my 4am CAB days and then a jaunt to somewhere in the middle of nowhere for a gig organised by another mate.  Keep listening at the end of the episode, there’s also an interview that I did with my local community station about Yurt Fest.  You do know about Yurt Fest, right?

Ep57 – Rachel in The Crown

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 57 – Rachel in The Crown
I’ve been sharing this journey with one person more than any other and so it gives me great pleasure to welcome Rachel Wheeley to Comedy in The Crown.  She’s been before (obvs) but this time she is in control as the host of the night.  We chat before the gig to see how she’s prepared, throw in a bit of stuff from the night (including a major catastrophe with my new set) and then catch up afterwards – when she’s drunk on half a pint of Guinness and adrenaline.  Enjoy!

Ep56 – Yeller

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 56 – Yeller
The football is on and I’m in Watford.  Will it mean that there is no audience?  And if there is an audience, will they like my jokes?  And if they do like my jokes, will they laugh?  Well, I already know the answers to these questions because it has all happened.  More worrying is a concern from another comic about some of my material.  Frankly, I’m still unsure what to do to rectify the situation but I guess it’s another blip on the road to becoming a better comic.

Ep55 – Development

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 55 – Development
Keeping my nose to the grindstone, or mouth to the microphone if you dislike metaphors.  This week I open at Comedy in The Crown and return to the Rose and Crown and the Freedom Fridge.  The set is developing and getting stronger every time and I’m really enjoying the progress I’m making with it.

Ep54 – Gigtastic

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 54 – Gigtastic
I’m starting to understand what it must feel like to have started doing stand up if I had been younger with no responsibilities.  I’ve been cramming the gigs in over the last week, four of which are discussed in this episode, including two brand new ones, a return to a gig I never thought I’d return to and a walk in.  Suffice to say, I’m really enjoying this at the moment.

Ep53 – 7 Years in the Making

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 53 – 7 Years in the Making
When I was seven years old, I had no idea what I wanted to do but I did have friends, so I was one step ahead of Lukas Graham.  Thankfully now that I’m considerably older than seven years old I’ve found something I love doing and Lukas Graham (unbeknownst to him) has helped me out a bit.  Welcome back to another episode of “Lee changes his mind about what he’s doing, again!” in which I decide to try a new set out… with hilarious… no, can’t write that even as a joke.  We join our hero as he jumps in his trusty gig-mobile and shoots off down the M1, to a brand new comedy night…

Ep52 – Nightshift

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 52 – Nightshift
At close to 3am in the morning, it’s easy to let your mind wander about where you’re going wrong.  it’s also quite easy to find a meeting room to record an episode of your podcast.  I do apologise if this one is a little introspective and, well, a bit dull.  I’ve added a couple of clips and a lovely bit of music to jazz it up but not sure if that will see you through.  However, it’s not all roses in the world of stand up, so it’s probably quite cathartic to share the lower points too.

Next time, I’ll be on top of the world again…. possibly ;-)

Episode 51 – Callback
I feel a lot better now, thanks for asking.  This tme I’m off to a small village near Milton Keynes to do a ten minute spot at JAM Comedy.  I dig out some old material and decide to try a callback… will it work?

Ep49 – I’ll Get Me Hat

4am CAB Presents…

Joking Around – One man’s journey into stand up comedy, from page to stage and beyond.

Episode 49 – I’ll Get Me Hat
Another two gigs this week, I could get used to this.  Firstly, I take the reigns at Comedy in the Yurt again, the second time I’ve allowed myself to do it and this time it was a lot easier.  After MCing at Comedy in The Crown regularly, I’ve now developed a lot more confidence in how to approach the task and I was happy with my preparation for the Yurt this time around.  Then the next day, I shoot off to the Freedom Fridge again to do a 5 minute spot, so very much two extremes.  Both go well but there’s a little problem to overcome at the second gig – thanks to Ian Ward (or is that Ed?) for helping me out.
